Get ready for a Sun Safe Summer

(and all year long!)

It’s August, and we are enjoying the warm summer season. Fun outdoor activities like surfing, paddle boarding, or relaxing on the beach are great ways to enjoy the season. However, exposure to the sun can lead to sun damage to our skin, resulting in sunburn, wrinkles, and even skin cancers.

According to the FDA, skin cancer is on the rise in the U.S. The National Cancer Institute estimates there were 100,640 new cases of skin melanomas and 8,290 related deaths in 2024. About 6.1 million people are treated for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the two most common types of skin cancer, in the U.S. every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sunscreen is a crucial way to protect against rising skin cancer rates. Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply one ounce (or one shot glass!) every two hours or more frequently if swimming to protect against UVA and UVB rays effectively.

In addition to sunscreen, wear clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun, such as long-sleeve shirts and broad-brim hats. Check out our selection of SPF shirts and wide-brim trucker hats for stylish and safe sun protection.

While discussing sun safety, don’t forget about the kids and dogs! Kids need the same sunscreen protection as adults. And yes, dogs need sunscreen, too. They can get sunburns and skin cancer just like their owners, says Dr. Bradley Krohn, a veterinarian with The Vets.

Wishing you a Happy and Safe Summer, Gypseas!
